How To Be An Effective Supervisor
As a superior/supervisor, we have a number of roles; influencing our subordinates, communicating with them effectively, supervising work, coaching and managing through conflicts.It is also our role as supervisors, to produce the actual departmental product/service to the citizens of the community.We sergeant accomplishes this task by having direct contact with the subordinates that we supervise to ensure accountability and performance objectives.We can either enhance or weaken the community's perception of the organization’s professionalism.Further, because of the first-line supervisor's close interaction with the subordinates, we are the key element in identifying and reducing potential misconduct incidents within police organizations.We are also tasked to delegate the jobs to our subordinate.
As supervisors, we should not be too “all knowing” or assuming that we can do our job by ourselves because of lack of trust to our subordinates.We should motivate our subordinates to reach their full potential in every project or tasks being assigned to them.It is our role to make them feel that they have the ability to excel in the field, to boost their morale and self- esteem.We should set realistic job assignment to them so they will not be too exhausted in accomplishing those.We should coach them to succeed or to do well in their craft.We should try to be friendly with them without compromising our authority to lead them.It is also our role to set good example to them because if they see that their supervisors do not even follow the rules and regulations of the organization, then they do not need to obey it too.We must establish and promote high ethical behavior from their subordinates.It is included in our role to ensure that the best way to protect those individuals under our supervision from mistakes, corruption or abuse of power is to be demanding, tough-minded, and a stickler for rules - there is no other viable option.We must "practice what we preach" by setting a high example in our own ethical behavior.We should be ready to listen to what they want or not in the organization so he can relay it to the management.As supervisors, we have an indispensable role in the police organization because we have to deal with our subordinates on one hand, or middle or high management on the other.It is our role to be the trainer, educator, partner, disciplinarian, counselor, listener, friend, communicator and performance evaluator to our subordinates.Our direct contact with the subordinates transcends to a great amount of influence.We have to be aware that with our ability to influence, every comment, gesture or non verbal communication is interpreted by their subordinates as either support for, or rejection of, a management position.
